Fliesentisch was created as part of a master’s thesis at the Berlin University of the Arts in the summer semester of 2023. Accompanied by the academic work Treasured Trash: Functions of Everyday Kitsch and Trash within Post-Ironic Aesthetics, the project explores the relationship between Heimat, kitsch, and identity. Rather than dismissing kitsch as trivial or mass-produced, it is reimagined as an aesthetic anchor and a creative form of cultural reflection.

The photobook documents, aestheticizes, and reinterprets German everyday kitsch as an expression of post-ironic appreciation and artistic exploration. Chapters such as Very Ugly Plates, Greetings from Germany, and Nari Naro offer varied perspectives, from cross-cultural reflections to the fusion of tradition and pop. Other sections like Daheim and Monas Omas weave childhood memories with emotional narratives, while Kirsch and Cruschd present innovative aesthetics and imagined taste experiences. The editorial Sauen, staged in the traditional setting of Jagdschloss Sauen, merges fashion, space, and post-ironic aesthetics.

Fliesentisch is a thoughtful engagement with kitsch, positioning it as a creative counterpoint to minimalist rigidity and as a playful expression of a renewed aesthetic language.
